Space/Place/Play | Espace/Lieu/Jeu: CWRC conference/colloque

27-29 Oct 2011, Toronto

SPACE/PLACE/PLAY: The second CWRC conference will take place 27-29 October at Ryerson University in Toronto. Keynote speakers: Dionne Brand, Lori St-Martin and Bethany Nowviskie.

Project Launch (Sept. 29) and CWRCshop (Sept. 30-Oct. 1)

You’re invited to a formal launch of the Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory!

Please join us on Thursday, September the 29th at 3:30 at Alumni House on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton for a celebration featuring writers Shawna Lemay and Aritha Van Herk. Reception to follow. Please RSVP to cwrc [at] ualberta [dot] ca.


Our Edmonton fall workshop will take place on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

The workshop keynote on visualization will be given by Dr. Laura Mandell, associate director of the NINES project and incoming director of the Institute for the Digital Humanities and New Media at Texas A&M University. Streams will include project and policy development, prototype training and evaluation, and visualization. Travel subsidies are available particularly to emergent scholars, courtesy of SSHRC (see below).

Location: Located on the West side of the U of A campus, the Lister Centre guest rooms are close to the workshop location. The guest rooms that can be booked for the conference are hotel-style rather than dormitory-style rooms.

Travel Subsidies

CWRC has funds available to assist scholars wishing to attend the workshop in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, on Thursday, Sept 29th 3:30-5:30 (project launch and reception for those who can make it); Friday, Sept 30th, and Saturday, Oct. 1st.

Workshop topics will include an introduction to CWRC, research-related policy discussions, visualization, interface, text analysis tools, debate of editorial matters including authority lists and textual tagging, and an introduction to current platform functionality. Dr. Laura Mandell of Texas A&M University will be addressing us on the topic of visualization and helping to lead our thinking in the area.

Priority will be given to: emergent scholars, those participating in a CWRC project, and those with limited travel funds.

Please send a brief application for support, specifying:

1) that you are applying for support for the Edmonton workshop

2) your name, institutional position or background, institutional affiliation (or if none, then a brief account of your research area and interest in the CWRC project);

3) the project, research interest or activity that you expect participation in the workshop to advance;

4) an estimated budget of expenses, indicating the amount of your request. Group rates are available at Campus Towers ($133 and $150), and Lister Centre (residences, $109) from Sept. 29-Oct. 2.

Send this information to by August 19 for full consideration. Requests made after this date may still be considered if funds are available.
